rehearsal dinner invitation

The rehearsal dinner is a room with a large set of feelings. Parents want to welcome people. The couple wants the night to stay a dinner and not become a second wedding. Guests want to know whether they should wear the suit again, bring a gift, and arrive at five or at seven. The invitation is where those wishes either get written down or turn into a week of texts.

Good rehearsal dinner wording is specific and short. It names the hosts, the reason, the time, and the edge of the guest list. It does not recap the love story. That speech belongs to the toast.

Rizz Invites handles the rehearsal the same way it handles the ceremony. The platform began as Birthday Rizz in February 2026 and now covers rehearsal dinners, weddings, showers, and the parties that fill the rest of a year. Hosts generate a card with AI or upload one they already like, send it by text or email, and watch replies in one dashboard. A reminder goes out the day before. Up to ten guests are free. Larger lists are $14.99, $29.99, or $64.99, paid once. No ads. No subscription.

Who Hosts, and Who Gets Named First

Tradition put the groom’s parents at the top of the card because they often paid for the dinner. Many families still do it that way. Many do not. The only rule that still matters is accuracy. Name the people who are actually hosting.

Parents hosting

Mr. and Mrs. David Chen request the pleasure of your company at a rehearsal dinner in honor of Amelia Chen and Jordan Blake Friday, the ninth of October at six o’clock in the evening The Oak Room, Harbor Inn Please reply by September 20.

Or, in a warmer register:

David and Linda Chen invite you to dinner the night before Amelia and Jordan marry. Friday, October 9, 6 p.m. The Oak Room, Harbor Inn RSVP by September 20.

The couple hosting

Amelia and Jordan invite you to dinner after the rehearsal Friday, October 9, 7 p.m. Bar Marta, 14 Pine Street Come as you are. Reply by September 22.

Both families hosting

Together with their families, Amelia Chen and Jordan Blake invite you to a rehearsal dinner Friday, October 9 at 6:30 p.m. The Grove, 220 Maple.

If more than two households are paying, do not stack four formal lines of titles. “Together with their families” is enough. The people who need to be thanked can be thanked in a toast.

For who belongs in the room at all, see who to invite to a rehearsal dinner. The invitation should not try to explain the politics of the list. It should simply reach the people on it.

What the Invitation Has to Include

A rehearsal dinner card fails in predictable places: no end time, no dress line, no word about plus-ones, an address that is a restaurant name without a street.

The facts

Who is hosting. Who is being celebrated. Day, date, and time. Full address. How to reply and by when.

The tone

Match the room. A backyard taco night should not borrow “request the honour of your presence.” A private dining room with a printed menu can carry a little formality. Mixed signals make guests overdress or underdress and then apologize for both.

The edge of the list

If the dinner is only for people in the wedding party and immediate family, the invitation itself is the signal — you send it only to those households. You do not need a line that says “this is not the wedding.” If someone not invited hears about it, a private note is kinder than a defensive sentence on the card.

If plus-ones are not included, name the guests. “We have reserved two seats for you” is clearer than a lecture. For the longer version of that problem, see plus-one etiquette on invitations.

Wording by Tone

Formal

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Alvarez request the pleasure of your company at a rehearsal dinner celebrating Isabel Alvarez and Michael Ward on Friday, the twelfth of June at seven o’clock The River Club Black tie optional The favour of a reply is requested by May 15.

Classic and warm

Please join us for dinner the evening before we marry. Friday, June 12, 7 p.m. The River Club, 40 West Quay Isabel and Michael RSVP by May 15.

Casual

Rehearsal dinner, then we stop rehearsing. Friday, June 12, 6:30 p.m. Joe’s Garden, 8 Vine. Tacos, lemonade, and whoever is in the wedding. Tell us by May 15 if you can come.

After a late rehearsal

The ceremony run-through ends at 6. Dinner should not pretend it starts at 6. Write the truth.

Dinner follows the rehearsal. Please arrive at the restaurant at 7:15 p.m. Friday, October 9 Bar Marta, 14 Pine Street.

Guests would rather wait at a table than circle a church parking lot.

What to Say About Dress, Gifts, and Speeches

Dress

If the dinner is informal and the wedding is not, say so. “Casual — the suits are for tomorrow” saves a rental. If the dinner is at a club with a jacket rule, put the rule on the card.

Gifts

Rehearsal dinners are not bridal showers. Most guests should not bring a wrapped present. If you want that understood, one sentence is enough: “Your presence is the gift; please do not bring another.” For more phrasing, see how to say no gifts please.

Toasts

Do not put “open mic” on an invitation unless you mean it. If speeches are planned and short, you do not need to advertise them. If you need to warn a shy parent that they will be asked to speak, that is a phone call, not a line on the card.

Digital Rehearsal Dinner Invitations

The rehearsal list is often assembled late. People are added to the wedding party in May. Aunts confirm travel in June. Paper suites ordered in March cannot keep up. Digital cards can.

Send the rehearsal invitation after the wedding invitation, or with it, but never before the wedding date is public. Guests should not learn they are in the wedding weekend from a dinner card that arrives first.

Rizz Invites lets the host send by text, email, or both, and share a link when a number is missing. Guests reply without an account. Hosts can allow plus-ones or not, ask about allergies, and turn on meal selection if the restaurant needs an entrée count. The same dashboard that holds the wedding RSVPs can hold the dinner — two events, two lists, one login.

A reminder the day before matters more for a rehearsal dinner than hosts expect. The location is often a different address from the ceremony. People remember the church and forget the restaurant.

Sample Cards You Can Steal

The night before the wedding Maya and Ben invite you to dinner Thursday, September 3, 6 p.m. The side garden at 18 Birch Dress for grass. Reply by August 20.

Helen and Robert Park invite you to a rehearsal dinner in honor of their daughter, Grace, and Daniel Cho Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m. Lantern Hall Kindly reply by April 17.

Wedding party and family: please come eat with us after we walk through the ceremony. Friday, 7 p.m., The Smith Room at Hotel Ellis. Jordan and Alex RSVP by the 12th so we can release the extra table.

Each version does the same work. Host. Occasion. Time. Place. Reply.

Timing

Send rehearsal dinner invitations four to six weeks ahead for a local dinner, six to eight if people are flying in only for the weekend. The wedding invitation still leads. The dinner card is a second, smaller map.

If the dinner is intimate — twelve people, a private room — a personal note can replace a formal card. The note still needs a reply date. Charm is not a headcount.

For the larger wedding clock, see when to send wedding invitations.

The Night Should Feel Like a Threshold, Not a Preview

The best rehearsal dinners do not try to outdo the reception. They feed the people who will stand up tomorrow and the people who raised them. The invitation’s job is to get those households into the right room at the right hour, dressed for the room that exists, not the room they imagined.

Write the card as if you were giving directions to a friend who is already tired. Then send it once, through one channel, and let the replies come back to one list.

Joyful parties start with effortless invites — including the dinner that happens before the vows. Rizz Invites.
