Reception-Only Wedding Invitation Wording: How to Invite People to the Party After the Vows
A reception-only invitation is not a lesser invitation. It is a precise one. The ceremony was small, private, already finished, or about to be finished in a room that cannot hold the rest of the people you love. The evening is the gathering. The wording has to say that without sounding as if the guests are an afterthought, and without implying they were barred from an altar they were never meant to stand beside.
Couples now send that card the same week they send everything else. Rizz Invites, once Birthday Rizz, builds the invitation, delivers it by text or email, and collects RSVPs in one place. Generate the image with AI or upload the design you already paid a stationer for. Share a link when the address book has holes. Ten guests are free; larger receptions are $14.99, $29.99, or $64.99, paid once. No ads on the reply. No subscription waiting in the fourth month.
Say What the Event Is
Guests should know, in the first two lines, that they are coming to a celebration of a marriage, not to the marriage itself. Ambiguity produces people in church clothes at a cocktail hour, or people who feel snubbed when they reconstruct the day from Instagram.
Good openings are plain.

The last version is informal. Use it when the rest of the invitation is informal. Formal rooms still want the older grammar. For the broader rules of tone, see our curated selection of wedding invitations.
What to Put on the Card
The same facts as any other invitation, minus the ceremony time if the ceremony is not theirs to attend.
- Who is hosting.
- The couple’s names.
- The word “reception,” or “dinner,” or “party to celebrate our marriage.”
- The day, date, and start time.
- The venue name and full address.
- How and when to RSVP.
- Dress, if the room requires it.
If the marriage already happened, say so in one clause: “following our ceremony in Oaxaca,” “after our wedding in June,” “married on May 2, celebrating with you now.” Guests should not have to decode a caption.
If the ceremony will occur that same day, in private, a line such as “ceremony to be held privately in the morning; reception to follow at six” keeps the afternoon from becoming a rumor.

Each of these can live on a phone. Rizz Invites will put the names into a high-resolution image in minutes, which is the point of retiring the old editors that treated a reception card like a poster in a craft aisle.
Host Lines When Parents Are Involved
If parents are paying for the dinner, their names usually lead. If the couple is hosting, the couple leads. If both, “together with their families” remains the peace treaty of modern stationery.
Do not hide a privately hosted ceremony behind parents’ names as if the parents forbade the larger guest list. The invitation should describe the event the recipient is actually invited to. Honesty here is etiquette.
Gifts, Dress, and the Things People Ask
Reception-only guests still bring gifts unless you tell them not to. If you would rather they did not, say so the same way you would on any other card. See no gifts please invitation wording. If there is a registry, keep it off the main invitation and on the RSVP page, a wedding website, or a follow-up note. The reception is not a storefront.
Dress codes belong on this invitation because the guests never saw the ceremony program. “Cocktail attire,” “black tie,” “jackets welcome, ties optional” — pick one and mean it. Dress code wording on invitations collects the phrases that prevent a row of sneakers in a ballroom.
Adults-only receptions after a tiny family ceremony are common. Name the adults. Do not send a lecture. Adults-only invitation wording has the sentences.
Timing
Treat a reception-only evening like the wedding it is for the people traveling. Six to eight weeks is the ordinary window; longer if guests are flying. A save-the-date that says “save the evening” is useful when the ceremony date and the party date are months apart. When to send party invitations and save the date wording cover the calendar.
Digital delivery is a particular kindness here. The story is already complicated. A text that contains the facts, a reply button, and a reminder the day before keeps the complication off the guest.
How to Handle the Feelings You Cannot Word Away
Some relatives will be hurt that they were not at the vows. The invitation cannot do that grief’s work. A call can. Send the reception invitation to the people you want in the room, and speak separately to the people who expected an aisle.
Do not use the card to justify the private ceremony at paragraph length. One clause is dignity. Three paragraphs is a defense.
Do not post ceremony photographs before the reception guests have been invited. The feed should not outrun the envelope.
RSVPs and the Headcount You Still Need
A reception has catering. It needs a number. Put a deadline on the invitation and collect replies in one list. Rizz Invites shows every yes, no, and plus-one in the My Invitations dashboard. Guests can send a message with the reply. If you are missing contacts, the event link gathers names and the split of adults and children so the venue is not a surprise.
Follow up on silence the same way you would for a ceremony-and-reception wedding. How to follow up on missing RSVPs is the practical companion.
The cleanest, fastest reception invitation is still the one that tells the truth, names the hour, and asks for an answer. Joyful parties start with effortless invites — Rizz Invites.
